Easter – a wonderful time – a favorite time of year.
Holy week here in Majorca and in all of Spain begins on Palm Sunday. Every evening during the week long, mournful processions wind along the narrow streets of the old city. Beautiful sculptured images depict scenes of Christ’s last week: washing the feet of the disciples, the Last Supper, the Betrayal. The ‘protagonist’ each evening is always the image of the Virgin Mary. We are saddened by the idolatry. The emphasis on Resurrection Sunday is Mary’s joy at meeting her Son - alive.
What a special treat - an added 'blessing' to be invited to spend Easter weekend with the congregation of an Assemblies church on the island of Ibiza. Ibiza is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of eastern Spain - the third largest of the Balearic Islands – just 40 kms from one end to the other. What we noticed as we were preparing to touchdown was the turquoise crystal clear waters in the many coves around the island. It really is a very picturesque island.
“Cristo vive” we greeted the folk as we entered the storefront on Sunday morning. “Christ lives!” It was a privilege to be invited for a weekend of special services. Our first visit to Ibiza! An encouraging Bible Study on Friday evening and also Saturday evening. Sunday morning – a wonderful Resurrection message! “Would you tell us about ‘missions’?" the pastor asked us. "Our church is very interested and just needs some direction and ideas.” So a ‘round table discussion’ on Missions took place on Saturday – after the message - followed by a good time of questions and answers. Missons will be an important focus of this congregation.
Of course the best thing of getting to know a new place is the people. We became acquainted with a wonderful, loving group of men and women, young people, boys and girls and enjoyed eating together each day – outdoors as the weather was perfect. Paella for 20 on Saturday. BBQ chicken, ribs, pork, lamb, sausage, for about 30 on Sunday. So good!
Now we pray for God’s family in Ibiza. They are a light, shining in the midst of much darkness. Ibiza has become famous for its nightlife - 'riotous nightclub-based nightlife!' “The Ibiza night is famous the world over!” I have never seen so many discotheques, erotic clubs, dancing places - wherever we walked or rode. It is well-known for its summer club scene. Thousands of young people from Spain and over Europe flock to the island – the latest music & to dance all night. I read that it has become known as the ‘Gomorrah of the Mediterranean’
If you happen to read or hear about Ibiza in the news…… pray for the believers there.
